The Ibero-American Initiative to Prevent and Eliminate Violence against Women arises from the XXVI Ibero-American Summit in La Antigua (2018), in which the Heads of State and Government pledged to continue their efforts to prevent, combat and punish violence against women.

In response to this commitment, throughout 2020 the SEGIB began a consultation process in which representatives of foreign ministries and governing entities of various Ibero-American countries participated to share experiences and good practices and discuss the relevance of proposing a Program/Initiative in this area.

This process gave fruit to the Ibero-American Initiative to Prevent and Eliminate Violence against Women, which was approved at the XXVII Ibero-American Summit of Heads of State and Government, held in Andorra in 2021, with the aim of contributing to the elimination of all forms of violence against women in Ibero-America.

Through a horizontal cooperation model that brings together countries with different trajectories, who share their experiences on an equal footing and participate according to their capacities, the Initiative will be the first permanent platform for Ibero-American cooperation in the prevention and elimination of violence against women, aspiring to become a regional and international benchmark.
